Time: 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM Location: Frontenac Ballroom The RAIC International Prize is a unique recognition for architecture that is transformative and that expresses values of social justice, respect, equality, and inclusiveness. The award of $100,000 was created in 2013 by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and the RAIC Foundation together with distinguished architect Raymond Moriyama, CC FRAIC RCA, reflecting a commitment to architecture with social relevance. The 2019 winner be announced at a gala dinner on October 25 and will present this year’s RAIC International Prize lecture. | |||

Arch, OAA, MAA, FRAIC Around the world, countries are developing and adopting architectural policies to help shape the future of the profession and to enhance the public's understanding of the importance of a quality built environment. This plenary will discuss a current collaborative initiative of the Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities (CALA), the Canadian Council of University Schools of Architecture (CCUSA) and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) focused on the development and implementation of an Architecture Policy for Canada. The session will include discussion of the current national initiative, a similar process undertaken in Quebec and provide both professional and governmental perspective. | |||

Time: 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM Location: Frontenac Ballroom Panelists: Graham Livesey, MRAIC, University of Calgary Steve Mannell, FRAIC, Dalhousie University Odile Hénault, Montreal Lola Sheppard, University of Waterloo, Lateral Office Moderator: Elsa Lam, FRAIC, Canadian Architect Coinciding with the launch of the book Canadian Modern Architecture: 1967-2017, co-published by Princeton Architectural Press and Canadian Architect magazine, this plenary session examines the state of Canadian architectural practice in three vital areas. Book co-editor Graham Livesey sets the stage by asking: What are key trends in Canadian architecture today? And how does the history of Canadian architecture inform its future? Steve Mannell, director at the College of Sustainability at Dalhousie University, will comment on the rich legacy of sustainable architecture in Canada, and where it may advance in the decade leading up to 2030. Architecture critic Odile Hénault will draw from her book chapter to present emerging trends in architecture for and by First Nations communities, an area crucial to Canada today. Lola Sheppard, co-founder of Lateral Office and associate professor at the University of Waterloo, will provide insight into emerging trends in northern Canadian communities, where unique environmental, logistical, and cultural challenges shape architectural responses. A panel discussion, moderated by book co-editor Elsa Lam of Canadian Architect, will broach the overlaps and connections between these topics. | |||

Cox, FRAIC, RAIC President Alan Jones, FRIBA, RIBA President The presidents of architectural associations from Canada, the United States, Mexico will take part in a discussion moderated by award-winning environmental journalist and author Stephen Leahy, whose credits include The Guardian, National Geographic, and MacLean’s. The final plenary of the 2019 RAIC Festival of Architecture explores the role that professional architecture organizations and architects can play in combatting climate change. It also looks at the challenges of creating a more sustainable built environment. Participating national organizations are the American Institute of Architects, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the Federación de Colegios de Arquitectos de la República Mexicana and the Australian Institute of Architects. Their presidents will discuss how environmental concerns and the climate crisis are being addressed by each country’s modes and methods of professional practice. | |||
